1. Centre Of Excellence For Women’s Studies University Of Karachi


The Centre of Excellence for Women's Studies at the University of Karachi, was set up in 1989 by the Ministry of Women Development, Government of Pakistan. The purpose of this academic discipline is to ensure the integration of women into the mainstream of development. This objective would be achieved through Women's Studies multidisciplinary programmes.

Creating an awareness and generating a debate on women's issues with a view to influencing policy-planners, the educated public and women's pressure groups.
Critically examining existing theories, models and methodologies and modifying them for an integrated development of women in Pakistan.
Introducing and promoting the discipline of women's studies at College and University level.

Formulating curricula at University, College and high school level with a view of incorporating knowledge on women's issues, gender gaps in urban and rural development.

Documenting women's contributions in various fields of learning and activity.
Identifying, replicating and translating relevant material from other languages in the national language.
Program of Studies

Master in Women's Studies

In order to introduce the discipline of Women studies in Pakistan, the Centre conducted two certificate courses in 1992 and 1994 The courses were attended by both females and males from government organizations, NGO's, media and medical profession. Both the courses proved to be a success and created an awareness for integrating women into the mainstream of national development. After several meetings with the University of Karachi and University Grant Commission permission for the two years M.A. Course in Women's Studies has been granted by the University of Karachi and in 1996 the first batch of students took admission. In 2002 Center has launched M.Phil and Ph.D program .From 2004 it has introduced the discipline of Women's Studies as as subsidiary course at First Year (hons) level.

2. Institute Of Women Development Studies University Of Sindh Jamshoro

The Institute of Women Development Studies, University of Sindh, Jamshoro was established in 1994. It has contributed significantly to  increasing the knowledge base of Gender and Development Studies in Sindh. The Institute has launched undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs in Women Studies and Home Economics. The Institute has organized several continuing education activities at Jamshoro, Hyderabad and in rural areas for the training and capacity building for women, academia, administrative staff, political leadership and gender and development professionals.


The ultimate goal of the Institute of Women Development Studies is to create awareness among women regarding their social, economic and legal rights and improve their status through formal and informal education. The interdisciplinary progress is there to build their confidence and to enhance their skills and ability to face different challenges in the different fields.

Out Reach Mass Awareness Motivation & Mobilization

The program includes an outreach component to reach various women groups and agencies dealing with women issues. Seminars and work-shops are a part of the program which will bring interested agencies on a common platform to devise specific projects.

3. Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur Women Chair

Women Chair

A department  has been established for skill development of women  at Shah Abdul Latif University. The following certificate courses extending over a six month course duration are being run by Women Chair, with nominal fee charges.

Imparting Training & Workshops At District Level

  • The objective of the project is to promote skills in rural and urban women for development of cottage industry.
  • The project aims at promoting women entrepreneurship on one hand and creating employment opportunities for skilled women on the other.
  • Training of over 1200 women from all over Sindh has been undertaken

Imparting Baby Child Care Training

  • The objective of this training is to provide a career building opportunity to women by imparting relevant training in a professional manner. Qualified personnel conduct trainings for this purpose.
  • Training is provided in batches of 15 candidates along with free boarding, lodging and stipend. Training of five batches has been successfully completed and training of other batches is under way.
